Super Bowl Champs in turmoil
In football wagering there is a reason why only one team in the post free agent market era has won back to back Super Bowls: it’s extremely difficult. In a league where parody (at least until this season) has been the norm, competition is extreme and injuries threaten to derail team’s dreams every week it’s all but impossible.
Just ask the Pittsburgh Steelers who entered the football betting regular season as the defending Super Bowl champs and on paper appeared to be even better than they were in the successful 2008-09 season.
But things don’t always end up the way the project in the preseason and after the team’s third consecutive pro football wagering loss in week 12 the team is now just 6-5, two games out of first in the NFC North and struggling to remain in the wildcard playoff hunt. Tough times indeed.
So what exactly went wrong in the football wagering world for the Steelers? Several things, but most prominently injuries. The defense has been devastated by the loss of DE Aaron Smith and especially Troy Polamalu.
Without Smith the front line has been susceptible to running plays and play action and without Polamalu it lacks big play capability. But the team’s biggest loss in the NFL wagering and the most worrisome element for the team is the recent concussion to Big Ben and the possible locker room turmoil that has resulted.
Without Roethlisberger the team was forced to start QB Dennis Dixon (one career NFL pass before Sunday’s game) and the offense was severely limited.
Teammates have publically questioned Roethlisberger’s commitment to the team and if he plays again he’ll only have a few weeks to and zero room for error in trying to get this team back to the post season.
